This kozuka is very rare in that it gives the age of the artist in the mei. It is by the prestigious Yoshioka school and by the age of the maker can be attributed to Yoshioka Terutsugu the 7th master who held the title from 1802-1849. This kozuka was from the famous Robert Cole Collection of fine kodogu which was auctioned in London on December 13th, 1990. A copy of this catalog is included with this piece. It is exceedingly rare to see a piece from the Yoshioka school which has anything other than the family name and title inscribed. This is an absolutely top quality piece.
