Hirata Futokoromono
This is an incredible example of the Hirata schools famous cloisonné. The Hirata School was started by Hirata Donin during the Keicho Period (1596). He was born in Kyoto and was called Hikoshiro. He was patronized by the Tokugawa and received a stipend and a house in which to live in Edo. The cloisonné technique was closely guarded and passed on to only one son in the family in each generation. There were ten generations who worked down through the Edo period. Signed pieces by the founder do not exist and only the last few generations left signed examples of their work.
The pieces of this school are very highly sought after and hard to find. Look through your auction catalogs and you will see that verified pieces by the Hirata school command top dollar.
