Russet Armor

Edo Period

This is an very nice armor that consists of a early superb russet 62 plate sujibachi kabuto, which was remounted in the mid Edo Period. The maibashi has red lacquer on the underside and a shakudo or yamagane fukurin along its edge. The shikoro is conical shaped (manju) and made of kiritsuke kozane (lacquered leather) done in black both inside and outside. The lacing is done in dark blue silk. The fukigaeshi are large and covered in deerskin with a family mon.

The mempo is a high quality russet mempo with a very large horse hair mustache, it is lacquered red on the back side.

The do is a nuinobu do constructed of kirisuke kozane and hinged under the left arm. The kote are russed iron mail mounted on dark blue cloth with a blue brocade backing. The Sode are black lacquered laced with blue silk. The lower portion of the do has individual scales lacquered gold and laced in dark blue silk. The kusazuri match the scales on the lower portion of the do and are suspended with matching dark blue lacing. The haidate are individual black lacquered hon kozane mounted on the same style brocade as the kote and the sunate. There is a bear fur edging along the bottom of the kesazure.

This is a very nice high quality matching suit of armor. Though the lacing and brocade are very fragile and exhibit some deteriation, it is all original and has never been relaced. This is one of the very few suits I have had that is roughly 300yrs old and is un-restored.

The russet iron set off with the gold trim and the bear fur make this an exceptional display.
